The President Welcomes You
I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as president for 2008 – 2009. I look forward to all the fun and commitment as the stars shine over our members as we expose your hidden talents.

This newsletter issue is exploring new territory. In an ongoing effort to reduce workload, we are trying this new format. It is our hope to make this a more efficient process of keeping our members informed. We hope to have more frequent updates and make this communication tool more effective.

Each of us has hidden talents – special talents that may be unknown even to ourselves. Through personal growth I would like to see each member seek out that unknown gift and develop it. As you find and cultivate your individual talents, our organization and community will benefit as our members are permitted to share in your newfound abilities.

I have an aggressive plan of action this year and we will all have to work together to accomplish it. Through better public relations I would like to reach out to our community and beyond. With increased community involvement I hope to strengthen our membership, and with more members our projects can expand and develop to meet the needs of our organization and community.

This is a volunteer organization and I am proud of the level of commitment and fellowship that we have come to expect from our members. You are the many “Stars of My Silver Screen”.

Ruth Hopper

On-line Newletter Makes official Debut
The Springfield Women of Today have decided to change the way their official newsletter is published. Previously, a print-ready newsletter was prepared quarterly and published in PDF format on this website. To better serve their membership and to redirect their own resources, the format has been changed to what you see here; a webpage-based version whose articles will be updated on a continuous basis. We hope this format better represents our projects and provides the reader with a more timely publication of events, reports, and items of note or interest.

For the following year, we will continue to provide archival copies of recent publication that may be downloaded, saved, and printed. We also have all publications in our files that date back to 2002 - as well as a selected few that are even earlier than that. Please use the "Contact Us" menu selection to the left to request them.

2008-2009 Officer Installation

On April 15, 2008, a new SWT Board of Directors was officially sworn in for the 2008/09 year. Held at The Old Luxemborg restaurant, members shared in food, fellowship, and a humorous roast of Joy Hutchcraft, the outgoing president. And as an inside joke for the Women of Today... "The Hen is Dead!"

News From the
Membership VP

Debbie Schnapp

I am serving as Membership Vice President this year. I have also served in several positions e.g. Personal Enrichment on the local board and Area Coordinator on the state board and can honestly say it has been a growing experience each time. I have gained confidence and more importantly made friendships that will last a lifetime.

As we wind down our Women of Today year and gear up for 2008, wouldn't this be a great time to invite a friend to a Women of Today meeting or function?

Let's keep “Building the Springfield Women of Today”.

Programming V.P.

I have held an officer position each year since joining 8 years ago. I find holding an officer position keeps you involved and you grow with each office you hold. I am serving as the Programming VP this year again and have already got many new ideas for you as members to help achieve success in the many programming areas and gain self improvement for personal growth. Listed below are some of the upcoming events that will be going on over the summer months.
If you aren’t available for the monthly meetings don’t fret, come join us at one of the programming events or a membership event. We are always glad to see busy members or new/old guest.

Please contact me if you have any questions about anything going on in the Chapter of Springfield Women of Today.

November is FOCUS on Women and Leadership Emphasis Month.

FOCUS on Women does not just cover women's issues. It includes that, but this form also encompasses careers, American Involvement and general health and personal concerns. Since this is an election year - are you registered to vote and if so, did you? If you did, you have completed the American Involvement portion of the FOCUS on Women certification. Only three more areas with one extra and you have it completed. Are you a member of another organization, did you attend a seminar regarding wills or certify in CPR. These are a few ideas off the form and most of these things we do at least once every year.

Leadership does not have a form, however, some workplaces offer leadership training for their employees. As long as you have 30 minutes, you have this area completed. If this is you, just let me know what, when, where you completed this training and the length of time.

If you have yet to accomplish this task, let me give you some ideas. Just remember you have to do at least 30 minutes for it to count.

Home: Do you make a list of chores for kids to do while you do your own?

Work: Do you head up a project with a group of people? Are you the office manager?

Community: Do you belong to an organization where you hold an office? Do you participate in recycling?

There are probably many more ways to certify if you just put your mind to it. Again, if you are not sure something will work - let me know - usually there is some way to work around it or make it fit our needs.

Until next time - Let's Monkey Around with Personal Enrichment

Secretary

Judy Armstrong

I am the secretary for our Springfield Chapter. This is going to be my second year holding an office in SWT and I am looking forward to spending more quality time with the wonderful women who belong to our organization.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a single parent of 3 kids (well 2 are adults now) ages 22, 20 and 17 (two girls and one boy respectively). I went back to college as a 30 year old and have been working at a job that I love for the almost 10 years. Going back to school as an adult made a huge difference in the direction of choosing a career. I am a Reimbursement Coding Specialist at SIU School of Medicine. I am also involved and hold an office in my local chapter of the AAPC ( American Academy of Professional Coders). I also am on the advisory board at MTI for their Medical Coding Program.

I grew up on a farm and couldn't wait to move to town, now I wish I were back in the country. Well, I don't really live in the city but Auburn does have over 4000 people. I love to go camping, spend time with my family (Deb Funsch is my sister by the way), I enjoy doing crafts, but most of all I enjoy having a good time whatever I'm doing and laughing. I like to be in charge most of the time, but I just have to say no sometimes.

Oh yes, and the most exciting news of my life right now is I'm going to be a grandma anytime—my daughter is having TWINS, a boy and a girl.

Buckets of Sunshine

Lisa Clark

I will be serving as your Buckets of Sunshine Coordinator for 2008-2009. I joined Women of Today in October 2002 and have held offices on the local, state and national levels. I have a wonderful family who has been very supportive of my journey with Women of Today. I have been married to my wonderful husband Chuck of 22 years. We have a beautiful daughter Chelsea, who is seventeen and a senior in High School. Our son Alexander is eleven and a sixth grader.

This year with Buckets of Sunshine we are going to do things a little different. Instead of monthly donations, we will be doing quarterly donations to various organizations. Our first quarter (May/June/July) Buckets of Sunshine is to collect items for Hope School . Please see the attached wish list. Our second quarter (August/September/October) Buckets of Sunshine we will be collecting items for Mary Bryant Home for the Blind. Please see attached wish list. Our third quarter (November/December/January) we will adopt a family for Christmas. The wish list will be out in November. Our fourth quarter (February/March/April) we will be collecting items for the food pantry. The wish list will be out in February.

I look forward to all the donated items that will be coming in for these wonderful organizations. I know your generosity will once again demonstrate what a caring group we have an our target organizations will be blessed.
